What Is ROAM Luggage?

ROAM Luggage

ROAM Luggage is an American brand that builds each hard-shell suitcase to order. Behind it is Charlie Clifford, who founded Tumi before co-founding ROAM. Instead of stocking warehouses with identical cases, the company assembles every bag by hand in its Vidalia, Georgia workshop.

According to ROAM, each case goes through more than 50 steps and uses 150 individual parts. The components come from specialist suppliers, including German-engineered polycarbonate, Japanese-engineered spinner wheels and water-resistant YKK zippers. In other words, ROAM suitcases are hand-assembled in the USA rather than built entirely from American parts.

Every case also includes a TSA-approved combination lock, an aircraft-grade aluminum handle with four height settings, and top, side and bottom carry handles. Inside, a removable compression board doubles as a hanging organizer, and the lining is antimicrobial and made from 100% recycled fabric.

How ROAM’s Customization Works

Customization is ROAM’s defining feature. First, you pick a size. Next, you choose colors for the front shell, back shell, zipper, wheels, handles, binding, trim and lining. The designer also lets you view the case in 3D before you order.

After that, you can add a complimentary monogram. It sits on a brushed steel plate that doubles as a pocket for a business card or contact details, which helps if an airline misplaces your bag.

Prefer not to design from scratch? ROAM also sells curated colorways, such as Newport (navy gloss with slate trim) and London (black gloss with tan trim). According to ROAM, these typically ship within 4 to 6 business days.

What It’s The Kellys found in their hands-on test

YouTube travel channel It’s The Kellys designed and reviewed a ROAM Carry-On Expandable in a paid collaboration with the brand. Lauren and Brian paired a slate front shell with a green back shell. They then added blue trim, tan wheels and a bright orange zipper.

Several practical details stood out in their review:

  • Fixed parts: the telescoping handle, the wheel housings and the TSA lock stay black whatever colors you choose.
  • Compression: both halves of the case have compression boards, which they said was a first among the bags they had reviewed.
  • Real-world weight: on their home scale, the empty expandable carry-on weighed about 7.8 pounds.
  • Packing Pods: ROAM sizes these cubes to each suitcase. In their test, one pod held three pairs of pants and a long dress, while another fit seven T-shirts and a heavy sweater.

What Real ROAM Owners Say

ROAM Luggage

ROAM’s own site shows a 4.8/5 rating from 202 verified reviews for the Carry-On, checked September 30, 2026. ROAM’s AI summary of recent reviews praises the light weight, smooth wheels and customization. That same summary also notes that lighter colors show scuffs more easily.

On Trustpilot, ROAM has a 4.0/5 TrustScore from only four reviews, so the sample is too small to draw firm conclusions. Meanwhile, Reddit discussions from 2025 show a genuinely mixed picture.

  • Build quality: several r/madeinusa owners called their ROAM cases rugged, sturdy and well designed. One owner said the wheels had changed how they travel.
  • Warranty support: a December 2025 Trustpilot reviewer said ROAM replaced a broken zipper quickly and easily. Similarly, a Reddit owner whose new checked bag cracked on its first trip said ROAM honored the 100-day trial return without questions.
  • A genuine criticism: another Reddit owner reported heavy scuffing on a first trip and a cracked shell on the second. That owner also said a warranty claim was refused about 15 months after purchase, and a few others mentioned handle failures.
